romney needs to do? >> oh, i think mitt romney needs to talk about failure and success. mitt romney may not be the perfect candidate, but this president doesn't have much in the way of accomplishments, especially when it comes to this economy. he has to say look, barack obama, you may have succeeded as a politician but you haven't succeeded as a president. i know what it takes to succeed in life, hai've done it a lot i business creating growth and jobs. let's talk about that. >> it does seem in the last couple days his campaign has been kind of trying to make him seem like a warmer guy. i mean, that photo -- >> hes loosened his tie, taken it off. he's laughed a little more. the job for mitt romney clearly is to get in the ring, get in the arena and to show that he can handle these tough issues. he hasn't been specific. he has to avoid talking about taxes, has to avoid talking about the 47%. he has to play offense. and president obama has to make sure that he doesn't play preventive defense. >> just being on that stage with the president, does that make mitt romney seem more presidential
for the denver debate. joining me now to talk about it, garrett hake, who has been traveling with the romney campaign. garrett, good saturday afternoon to you. what can you tell me about governor romney's debate preparations this weekend? >> well, craig, i can tell you, so far, it hasn't really started at. at the moment, he's over at his oldest son's house in massachusetts. we are expecting governor romney to participate in some more debate prep this weekend. understand senator rob portman from ohio will be here, he'll also be traveling with the governor to denver on monday. they're at the stage now where the expectations game includes not really discussing even when and where they're doing debate prep. the campaign's official line, wherever's preparing for debates, is that he's holding private meetings. they don't want to give the impression that he's doing nothing but studying. >> because, again, if you study for 75 hours for a test, you better make an a-plus, or people begin to say funny things about you. it seems like every day or so, we hear from a new republican, who's hitting the romn
romney do? he should really be more deft in talk about his life story. for some reason, he shied away from that, whether it's the role that faith has had in his life and certainly the production that he oversaw at bain capital and other places. this man helped create actual businesses and by extension, he says thousands of jobs. i take him at his word, at places like sports authority, best buy, staples. these are everyday household names. he ought to be willing to do that. i also think he has to show a little leg and go on the offense against president obama which is my entire point about making this -- putting the president on the defensive and letting him explain his record because obama '08 no longer exists. those debates were great for him because he can run on promises, he can make people feel hopeful. he now has to run on his record. >> i agree with this. jennifer granholm, when i watched the convention speeches for the democratic convention, i thought that bill clinton made a mesmerizing speech, brilliant both in the rhetoric and the devil of the detail which was undeniable. al

. bob seger music background music there. >>> in today's strategy talk, president obama and mitt romney head into wednesday night's debate with the president leading in the latest polls in all nine battle ground states. at the same time, governor romney's favorability rate rgz in the low 40s which is almost 10 points lower than president obama's and three points lower than former president george w. bush at this point. voters in several swing states also say they believe president obama cares more about the needs and problems they are currently facing. this is a snapshot here of florida, ohio and pennsylvania. when you look at which candidate voters think will implement policies favoring the middle class, president obama comes out ahead of governor romney in those same three states. joining me now for strategy talk, msnbc political analyst and republican strategist and publisher of mullings.com. rich i'll begin with you here. how frustrating are these numbers for the romney camp and the gop? is there any buyer's remorse? do you still think there is time without some dramatic event to tu
